Mount Rainier: Camp Schurman August 2017

Mount Rainier National Park is the first National Park I ever worked, where I served as a Geological Society of America Mosaics in Science intern in 2013. That summer was life changing, to say the least, and inspired a lifestyle, career, and relationship I had never imagined before. Almost a year after we first met at the park Brian and I committed to our long-distance relationship, and since then I've come back every year to visit him at the mountain, but not during summer. While summer is not the only season that holds the magic of Mount Rainier, it is undeniably special. I felt due for a return visit during the season in which I fell in love, so I planned a visit in August, this time hiking up to Camp Schurman to hang out with Brian while he staffed the high camp.

Arrived at Camp Schurman just in time to catch the moon rise over the mountain.

Glaciers hold a very special place in my heart, and being so close to them is simply remarkable. Each drip during ablation (melting) seems small and insignificant, but holds major implications for both the journey and lifespan of the glacier.

"Darling, would you go out and gather some ice for our cocktails?"

My dear friend Rebecca came up to visit, and arrived just in time for crevasse rescue practice.

View from inside a crevasse in the glow of dusk. Camp Schurman is visible at the bottom of the ridge.

That feeling when you're dangling in a crevasse (on purpose).

Sun glows through the marine layer as it sets below our visible horizon.

Down the mountain and to Seattle just in time to catch my flight. Plus one last view with clear skies on the way home.
