Accidental Kerchief Scarf

Yes, this pattern was an accident. Or, to be more accurate, it is the result of my misunderstanding of a simple pattern. The basic "yarn over, knit two together" is not what you'd call complicated, but since I had never done it before and was working based off memory from what someone had described to me at some point in time, I didn't get it quite right.
It didn't take long for me to notice that my rows were shrinking. But I ain't no quitter, so I kept going -- making the same mistake and dropping stitches in each row.
Instead of the wide, lacy infinity scarf I had intended to make, I ended up with a pretty cute kerchief. I weaved some fringe onto the edges and slapped a couple of buttons on it and actually felt proud of what I unintentionally created.

The first truly accidental kerchief was made with Manos de Uruguay yarn in Farmstand, which I bought at Desert Thread in Moab, UT this past winter. After liking my results, I decided to make a few more (on purpose this time) and nail down a pattern. For these I went with a thicker, cozier yarn, which includes Lion Brand Yarn Nature's Choice Organic Cotton (shown in Almond and Espresso), and Lion Brand Yarn Homespun (shown in Nouveau).

Accidental Kerchief Scarf

Materials

Yarn: ~105 yards heavy worsted/Aran weight
Needles: US 8 (5 mm)
Gauge is not important. You can use US 9 ( 5.5 mm) or bigger needles if you'd like your kerchief to be a little more relaxed and lacy.

Abbreviations

CO = Cast On
k1 = knit one
k2tog = knit two together
yo = yarn over

Instructions

CO 79 stitches
Row 1: k1, k2tog, [yo, k2tog] k2tog. Repeat between the [ ]
Rows 2 - 35: Repeat Row 1
Row 36: k1, k2tog, k2tog
Row 37: k1,k2tog
Row 38: k2tog

Binding off isn't necessary since you work down to a single stitch. Just break yarn and pull through to make a knot. For fringe, cut pieces of yarn the same length (roughly 6 in), fold them in half, and loop them around the edges of the scarf with equal spacing. Sew on a couple of buttons of your choice on one corner, and you're all done!
